Atlantic Rainforest


The Atlantic Forest of Brazil extends from Rio Grande do Norte state in the north to Rio Grande do Sul state in the extreme south, about 8,000 kilometers (4,800 miles) in length with a 'branch' that runs up into south Piaui and an 'interior area' extending into eastern Paraguay and a bit of the province of Misiones in Argentina, as shown on the map.

At time of the early explores, the Atlantic Forest alone covered more than 350,000 sq. kilometers (140,000 sq. miles), an area larger than Italy, Poland or Great Britain.
Presently, there is no such thing as a single, homogeneous forest. Since the region extends from the 5th to the 30th parallel, it is obviously subject to great climatic variation and includes different kinds of soil, having originated from different geological formations.

Along its width, there is also ecological variations, from the ecosystems of the coastal plains to those of the Atlantic cliffs or of plateaus in the interior, in a strip ranging from only several to 160 kilometers (100 miles) wide.
