In 1981, unconfirmed reports from fishermen that a large black whale was still being sighted in Southern Brazil caught the attention of whale activities and researchers. It was then created the Projeto Baleia Franca / Right Whale Project with a dual mission: to undertake research and monitoring of the remaining Right Whale (Eubalaena australis) population in one hand, and to promote legal improvements, law enforcement, public education and community awareness on the plight of this endangered species and on the need to protect these harmless but threatened creatures.
