Caiman is a pioneer project of ecotourism in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul and has gained vast experience in this type of tourism over its 17 years of existence. About 236 kilometers (147mi.) from Campo Grande, Refúgio Ecológico Caiman is located on a cattle farm of approximately 13,000 acres. Travelers stay in one of four lodges. The weather determines which tours will happen in each season.
The options for tours are: Ecological trail hikes, horseback rides, farm tour, canoe trips, and authentic picture-taking safaris, always presided over by the Caimaners, the official guides specialized in flora and fauna. At Caiman, it is also possible to take part of a Cattle Drive, a local tradition, in which about 300 heads of cattle are driven by the travelers along with guides and workers (under request).
There are two daily activities, one in the morning and another one in the afternoon. At night, visitors can watch an audiovisual presentation about the Pantanal or take a look at the animals at night. These night excursions are done after the afternoon outing in the winter; in the summer, they are after dinner.
Over time, Caiman has become known also as a place of reference for development of scientific research. In the past, several scientific research projects were done, even before the hotel was created. We can cite some of these projects: Cervídeos Research (Laurenz Pinder); Blue Macaw Project (Carlos Yamashita and other collaborators); Cougar Behavior (George Schaller and Peter Crawshaw); Radiotelemetria done with the Wood Ibis (Paulo Antas). At the moment, Caiman houses the Blue Macaw Project, devised by the Biologist, Neiva Guedes of Uniderp and the Real Parrot Project (Gláucia Seixas).
